In the 2013 parliamentary elections, Sebastiano Barbanti was elected deputy of the 17th Legislature, in the Calabria constituency, on the lists of the 5 Star Movement.

On 26 January 2015, after several months of disagreement with the movement’s inner leadership, he announced, along with eight other MEPs and one senator, that he was leaving the 5 Star Movement, thus switching to the Mixed Group.

Ten days later, on 5 February 2015, together with the other exiles from the movement in the Chamber of Deputies, he formed the component of the Mixed Group called Alternativa Libera, within which he remained until 17 November 2015, the date on which he returned to the non-members of the Mixed.
On 16 March 2016, he announced his membership of the Partito Democratico, thus joining the majority of the Renzi government.
